Training
Training activities begin at 8:00 a.m., running until
completion. Most training sessions are held at the Mead Dog Training grounds.
The day begins with the sale of birds for those members who have ordered in
advance. At 8:00 a.m. we normally have a short meeting for general
announcements and coordinating the training activities for the day. A typical day has the Natural Ability level dogs working in one
of the three fields. Often more experienced members are available to help new
members and their pups with their training techniques. Utility and Utility prep
dogs then split between the other fields and the water sites. Each training day also features a training lesson on the topic
of the month (i.e., Whoa, heel, etc.) given by an experienced member. The
basic training techniques are covered during each session, usually with hands on
demonstrations. Anyone is welcome to join us at a training day to see what
NAVHDA is about. You will likely be told several times that "we will not train
your dog but we will train you to train your dog." The atmosphere is very
informal and the members are very willing to share their knowledge (we hope to
learn from you!!). If you are wondering what to bring to a training
day, a typical list of equipment is provided in our
Handlers Equipment Checklist . Dog training permits are required between May 1st and August 1st
each year if you are using game birds to train your dog. Permits are required
by law and the DNR will assess a fine if you are not in possession of the permit
or proper tags when training. 2010 SCHEDULE (Changed from original date) |
